Topic 1: What Artificial Intelligence Really Is Explained Simply

By Glenda Hartman · May 1, 2026

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most talked-about technologies in the world today. Yet many people still feel unsure about what it actually means. Some imagine robots taking over jobs, while others think AI is simply another name for automation. In reality, AI is much broader and much more practical.

At its core, AI refers to computer systems that can perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence. This includes things like understanding language, recognising patterns, analysing information, generating content, and making predictions.

Many South Africans already use AI every day without even realising it. When your banking app detects suspicious activity, when Google Maps suggests a faster route around Johannesburg traffic, or when a customer service chatbot answers questions online, AI is often working behind the scenes.

In workplace learning and development, AI is increasingly being used to:

  • create training materials,
  • summarise documents,
  • assist with research,
  • generate assessments,
  • improve communication,
  • and personalise learning experiences.

However, AI is not magic. It does not “think” like humans do. It works by analysing vast amounts of data and identifying patterns. This means AI can sometimes produce inaccurate, biased, or incomplete information. Human oversight therefore remains essential.

For organisations, the real question is no longer whether AI will affect the workplace. The question is how people can learn to use it responsibly, ethically, and effectively.

Discussion Point

Do you think most employees understand what AI really is, or is there still fear and misunderstanding around it? We'd like to hear your thoughts.
