Topic 2: How AI Is Changing the Modern Workplace

By Glenda Hartman · May 2, 2026

AI is already changing how many organisations operate. From administration to communication and training, technology is helping employees work faster and more efficiently. The challenge for many workplaces is learning how to balance efficiency with human judgement.

In South Africa, many businesses face pressure to do more with limited resources. This is where AI can offer practical support. Administrative staff can use AI tools to draft reports, training providers can generate learning content more quickly, and managers can summarise large amounts of information in minutes instead of hours.

For example:

  • HR departments are using AI to assist with recruitment screening.
  • Learning and development teams are using AI to create training materials.
  • Customer support teams are using AI chat systems to answer common queries.
  • Small businesses are using AI tools to improve communication and marketing.

While these developments can improve productivity, they also raise important concerns. Employees may worry about job security, reduced human interaction, or unfair decision-making.

The reality is that AI works best when it supports people rather than replaces them. Skills such as critical thinking, emotional intelligence, ethical judgement, and communication remain deeply human strengths.

Organisations that succeed with AI will likely be those that focus not only on technology, but also on helping employees adapt and develop new skills.
