Topic 9: The Risks of Relying Too Much on AI

By Glenda Hartman · May 9, 2026

AI can save time and improve efficiency, but overreliance on it may create new problems in the workplace.

One major risk is accuracy. AI tools sometimes generate information that sounds convincing but is incorrect or misleading. Employees who fail to verify information may unintentionally spread errors through reports, training materials, or workplace communication.

Another concern is reduced problem-solving ability. If people rely on AI for every answer, they may gradually stop analysing situations independently or applying their own judgement.

There are also risks around confidentiality. Employees may upload sensitive information into public AI systems without fully understanding how that information is stored or used.

In learning environments, overdependence on AI may weaken genuine learning. Learners may submit polished assignments generated by AI without fully understanding the work themselves.

AI should support human capability and not replace responsibility, accountability, or critical thinking.
